Last night we had a double variety program. Quite good. I have joined a studying group for drawing, poster design and lettering. Got last Saturday first letter from Lily addressed to Camp T. My first letters took nearly 9 weeks! Received noney order is appreciated very much. Will enable me to pay postage for new letter forms issued which was becomes necessary Got warm underclothing flannel shirt and woolen gloves at last. Look quite as good quality. Letter from Neville, Donald and Miss Robertson arrived today (Wednesday, October 30, 1940) Pleased to have fairly recent news. Reminding me of my week-end. Bath night is turned on our water system again. Today I had quite a hot shower bath though in intervals. But can we trust the pleasure of hot and cold running water will last? I am afraid we can't as the pump is broken down again for a change. No water for some days.A nice prospect. Today a new '' getting-the-voluntary-worker'' device has been tried combined with a new kind of roll call in fresh morning air. Capt. starts cuts trees and commandent pulls a carriage as we are at our work. The chapter about ''voluntary work '' is a rather stiff one. A lot of men are required for labouring around the camp and the willingness to dig for victory in the mud is not ???. Consequently our beautifully organized ''labour exchange and ministry'' cannot always provide the required number of workers and the needed ''volunteers'' are asked by the Sargeant with lowered bayonets of the guards who don't know what to do with them. These methods arouse the public spirit and protest are made and the labour minister strongly criticized. Matters seem fairly well settled and our worker delivery system works as smoothly as can be possible by the large percentage of intellectual workers. Results? Today again ''volunteers'' are collected on the point of the bayonet.
